About
I was born and brought up in Northern Ireland. For many years I worked as a researcher and producer of television documentary films. After moving to the USA, a lifelong interest in the visual arts coalesced with a need to find a creative outlet. As a result I started taking pictures of my own. For a couple of years stills photography was an occasional, tentative and experimental activity, but recently it has become an essential part of my life.
In television, a narrative develops in sequences of moving images, which may be seconds or even minutes long, so I am fascinated by how different and how challenging it is to try to tell a story within a single frame. The photographer, Aaron Siskind, once remarked that ‘photography remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.’ The still photograph does not reduce, but enlarges, our perception and understanding of life’s elusive, fleeting moments.
