wabi sabi
“Searching is everything and photography is the best way I know of bringing me closer to some of those mysteries of existence…I photograph to learn and understand.” (Wynn Bullock)
This series of photographs continues my fascination with the found art we encounter every day on the walls in our city streets.
Going in close, I am struck by how the elements, accretions of age, and human markings in the shape of graffiti and bill posting, create a topography reminiscent of the rough texture and haphazard beauty of raku pottery. Raku is much prized in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. It is inspired by the Zen philosophy of wabi-sabi, in which the quiet celebration of impermanence and imperfection, and acceptance of inevitable change and decay, are the touchstones of beauty.
